About Us

The Friends of the Missouri National Recreational River (FOMNRR) is a community of the Missouri River’s greatest advocates. We’re neighbors, landowners, river enthusiasts, business and community leaders, and stewards of our lands and waters. While our members come from many backgrounds, we are united by our shared appreciation and respect for the Missouri National Recreational River (MNRR).

The Missouri River means something different to each of us, but it connects us all. Through FOMNRR, people come together to support advocacy, stewardship, education, and outdoor recreation, so we can protect and enjoy this remarkable river today and for generations to come.

Friends of the Missouri National Recreational River is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and is the official philanthropic partner of the Missouri National Recreational River.

Our Mission

Build awareness, enhance, and advocate for the scenic, recreational, fish and wildlife, ecological, geological, cultural, historical values, and economic opportunities of the MNRR, a recreational component of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System.

Our Goals

  • Develop and maintain partnerships to enhance the MNRR and the adjacent middle Missouri River corridor for the betterment of people within the region and the country.
  • Enhance the quality of the visitor experience, making the MNRR a national tourist destination.
  • Provide leadership in developing a shared vision and a unified voice for MNRR stakeholders.
  • Build an active community of supporters and raise funds to support MNRR natural and cultural resource stewardship.
  • Support the park in collaborative efforts with Tribal Nations.
  • Increase public awareness and stewardship of the MNRR.
  • Facilitate efforts to enhance the MNRR and specifically the “Missouri National Recreational River Outstandingly Remarkable Values,” which include the free-flowing condition and scenic, recreational, fish and wildlife, ecological, geological, and cultural values.
  • Promote and coordinate volunteer activities of the MNRR.

Discover Your River

Located in southeast South Dakota and northeast Nebraska, the Missouri National Recreational River (MNRR) protects over 100 free-flowing miles of the Missouri River and several of its tributaries. The park is divided into two sections: the 39-Mile District and the 59-Mile District, which are separated by Lewis and Clark Lake.

Whether you are local or a visitor, there is always something new to do, see, and enjoy. From paddling and fishing to hiking and birdwatching, recreating along the MNRR offers the unique opportunity to explore some of the last free-flowing of the nation’s longest river.
