Frost Trail
The Frost Trail was first completed in 2017 with the support of many dedicated partners. Located within the Frost Wilderness Game Production Area (GPA), the trail offers visitors a unique window into the diverse habitats along the Missouri River. It winds through riparian woodlands and along the grassy banks of the Missouri National Recreational River, with scenic views of the Gunderson Backwater along portions of the route.
Since its completion, additional improvements have been made, including updated trailhead signs and trail maintenance to reinforce the land against future erosion. Along with Friends of the MNRR, key partners and sponsors in supporting the Frost Trail include the National Park Service; South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks; Lewis and Clark Regional Water System; Vermillion Area Community Foundation; and the Howard Coker Memorial Fund.
Recreating on the Frost Trail
The Frost Trail begins near the intersection of SD Highway 19 and Dakota Street in Vermillion and is about 2.2 miles one way. An auxiliary trailhead near the southern end of the Frost Wilderness GPA provides an option for a shorter hike.
The trail is designated for hiking and other foot traffic, such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
Please note: The Frost Wilderness Game Production Area (GPA) is owned and operated by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, and the Frost Trail falls entirely within the GPA. The GPA’s primary purpose is to provide opportunities for hunting, fishing, and trapping during legal seasons.
When a legal season is in session, trail users should remain on designated walking paths. Pets should stay on-trail and on-leash, except when participating in lawful hunting activities.
Hunting and trapping seasons vary annually. For current information, please visit gfp.sd.gov/hunt.
